Income expectations
Studying English courses
An example of student’s income during 6 month English language course in Australia:
- 12 weeks of general English + 1 month of holidays
- 12 weeks of Cambridge test preparation + 1 month after the course
If you are coming to Australia to study for six months, the total duration of your visa will be approximately 8 months.
Leaving at least one month to look for jobs, your provision of income could roughly be:
- 24 weeks of study: 24 weeks x 20 hours/week x $15AUD/hour = AUD 7,200
- 1 month (4 weeks) of full-time job during holidays: 4 weeks x 40 hours/week x $15AUD/hour = AUD 2,400
- 1 month (4 weeks) after finishing the course: 4 weeks x 40 hours/week x $15AUD/hour = AUD 2,400
With a total gross income around AUD 12,000 (7,200 + 2,400 + 2,400), your net income would be around AUD 11,100 ( AUD 12,000 - AUD 900 of taxes).
PLEASE NOTE:
In the case of courses shorter than 6 months, you have to pay higher taxes, as you would be considered as non-resident for tax purposes. See details here.
Studying Vocational courses
If you come to Australia to study one year at any vocational course, your year timetable would be 36 weeks of classes and 16 weeks of holidays.
Leaving at least one month to look for jobs, your provision of income could roughly be:
- 36 weeks of study: 36 week x 20 hours/week x $15AUD/hour = $10,800 AUD
- 16 weeks of holidays: 16 weeks x 40 hours/week x $15AUD/hour = $9,600 AUD
With a total gross income around AUD 20,400 (10,800 + 9,600), your net income would be around AUD 18,240 (AUD 12,000 - AUD 2,160 of taxes).
