Hourly wage in Canada

In contrast to Australia, jobs in services aren’t very well paid (almost every job, where you get tips). However, manual work and more specialized work is paid quite well. See the chart below to have a general idea.

 Type of job

Entry hourly wage

Hourly wage after

Waiter, bartender, coffee shop employee… (tips on top)

$9 $12

Cleaning

$11-12 $14

Landscaping

$14 $16

Hotel staff (cleaner, hostess)

$14 $16

Receptionist

$15 $18

Construction

$14 $25

Professionals (work with wood, electricians, geodes, …)

$20 $25

Overview:

In general, boys earn more money than girls. People working in hospitality earn minimal hourly wage, but it very much depends on their abilities and place where they work (there are some really high class restaurants where you can get $15/hour, but they will “tear you into pieces”). However, good money can be made on tips. Tipping in Canada is a “must” and tips are usually about 20% of spending. The biggest advantage working in hospitality is every day use of English.

Well paid are boys (and girls) in construction – good employers are BC Hydro, currently BC Place...

Geodes are almost the only professionals, who don’t have to “convert” their degree. There is a huge demand for them and I know personally 4 people who returned back to Canada under “young professionals” program after their WHV expiration.

So yes, your students can cover their costs here fully. If they make more then $12/hour, they will most likely cover for example flight ticket and 3 months of English.
